Uniting Norway into a kingdom cannot be achieved without the virtues of passion and patience. Although it is not that important; we can ask ourselves, perhaps with a smile on our lips, if it was a passion for Princess Gyda or for unity that was uppermost in Harald Hårfagre’s mind? Whatever the answer, what is important, though, is that he accomplished what he set out to do: Norway became a kingdom with Avaladsnes as the country’s first royal seat.

Is it the same passion that makes downhill skiers brave steep unprepared slopes, surfboarders to throw themselves at huge waves, or off-road enthusiasts to whizz down mountainsides on bicycles? We don’t have a definite answer, but we do know that there are almost limitless possibilities here if you like challenges and the kick of adrenaline that goes with such challenges.

For those who love the water, the North Sea with its beaches and inviting waves is on our doorstep, ready for surfboarders and kite flyers alike. Alternatively, if you have a passion for the snow that covers the mountains and plateaus, then it is only a short distance to the nearest ski resort. Or maybe you prefer the more wild and untouched landscape and would like to make a trail along a mountainside not walked since the last fall of snow. The landscape of Haugalandet is full of challenges, all just waiting to be discovered.

If you are interested in glacier hiking, then Haugalandet is the place to fulfill your dream of walking across one of these geological wonders. The southern tip of Folgefonna Glacier juts into our region and we are able to provide information as to how you can go glacier hiking in an exciting and safe way.

Maybe you are interested in excellent art and cultural experiences? The cultural centre of Haugesund and the surrounding region have many rich and diverse events occurring throughout the year. During the festival month of August, the town is seething with life when it hosts the Sildajazz Festival and the Norwegian Film Festival and great experiences are stacked close together.

Shopping is a great passion for some. In Haugesund, you can finally find that stylish boutique you’ve been hunting for, or stumble upon the ideal gift for your loved one. Our region is an excellent shopping location where you can wander along Norway’s longest pedestrian street that is full of exciting shops. We can also recommend a trip to Amanda Shopping Centre, one of the country’s most stylish emporiums. In addition, the other small towns and villages of the region can provide a broad spectrum of good shopping possibilities.

In the same way as the Vikings created a well-organised society, we have organised a range of exciting and memorable experiences for you. In the home of the Vikings, there are more than enough possibilities to get the adrenaline flowing, making you feel alive – whether it is the great outdoors, culture, or shopping that is passion.
